Planned orthopaedic therapy

Patients having planned orthopaedic surgery will be supported in their recovery by the Elective Orthopaedic Therapy Team.

The multidisciplinary therapy team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy assistants, based at Ormskirk hospital, provide a seven-day service to patients undergoing a range of surgeries including upper and lower limb joint replacements, arthroscopies, shoulder, hand, foot and ankle surgery.

They work closely with the orthopaedic consultants and nursing team providing therapy intervention on H Ward (the elective orthopaedic ward).

Treatment for patients due to undergo total hip and total knee replacements starts ahead of the operation. The occupational therapists endeavour to contact all patients prior to admission to carry out a baseline assessment of their current function, prepare and educate them regarding admission, surgery and post-op rehabilitation and establish any need for equipment provision. If issues of concern are highlighted in this assessment a pre-operative home visit can be carried out.

They aim for a length of stay of one to four days for patients undergoing joint replacements and also provide an accelerated rehabilitation programme.

For all  patients, they assess and agree a treatment plan that aims to provide functional goal led intervention, enabling independent mobility, self-care activities and ensuring a timely patient-centred discharge from the ward.

Beyond hospital

The Therapy Discharge Scheme ensures the therapy team provide the best support to a patient being discharged.

They are able, where necessary, to take a patient home to assess their safety and functional level in their home environment – this can be carried out prior to, or at the time of discharge. The team also carries out telephone call follow-up and arrange further visits at home as required. A patient discharged onto the Therapy Discharge Scheme has access to the team for 10 weeks.

Out-atient physiotherapy/occupational therapy appointments are arranged for patients at Southport hospital or Ormskirk hospital. Patients who live out of our area are given the option of attending Ormskirk/Southport or being referred to a hospital in their own locality.
