Joint Health Integrated Musculoskeletal Service

Joint Health is an integrated musculoskeletal (MSK) service providing specialist assessment, investigations and treatment for patients with musculoskeletal conditions (problems with muscles, joints or spine).

It is a multidisciplinary team including specialist MSK physiotherapy consultant, specialist doctors, specialist consultants in musculoskeletal medicine, specialist physiotherapists, advanced practice physiotherapists and podiatrists plus specialist occupational hand therapist.

The service offers a “one-stop shop” approach providing specialist assessment and treatment plus access to radiological investigations (x-ray, ultrasound scans and MRI), haematological investigations and neurophysiology investigations (nerve conduction studies and EMG).

The service also offers soft tissue and joint injection clinics and ultrasound guided injections.

Joint Health is the first point of contact for patients with MSK conditions.

Patients can access the service via the self-referral pathway if they have a routine MSK problem or via e-referral from their GP if their GP feels the condition would benefit from an orthopaedic surgical opinion.

Referrals can also be diverted to most secondary care services if required at any point e.g. orthopaedics, pain clinic, rheumatology and neurosurgery.

Referrals

By e-referral from GPs commissioned by Southport and Formby CCG and West Lancashire CCG.

GP directed self-referral. Most patients are advised by their GP to telephone our self-referral appointment line and book their appointment directly for themselves.

This is an efficient process since Joint Health and local GP practices all share the same patient records meaning quicker processes for patients and easier access to investigation results and letters for GPs.

Where will we treat you? Patients are seen at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, Formby clinic, Ainsdale Centre for Health and Wellbeing, Tarleton Health Centre, Hillside Health Centre and Burscough Health Centre.

Your first appointment will be the first available rather than the nearest to your home but the option will then be given for future appointments at outlying clinics where appropriate.
