Mixed sex accommodation has been virtually eliminated in both our hospitals.
Every patient has the right to receive high quality care that is safe, effective and respects their privacy and dignity.
Patients who are admitted to either of our hospitals will only share the room where they sleep with members of the same sex. The same will apply to the toilets and bathrooms close to these same sex bed areas.
However, occasionally, it is necessary to treat men and women together on the Accident and Emergency observation ward and within Critical Care. This is usually due to demand for beds across the hospital.
We aim to tell patient, or their representative, this will happen before it occurs. After each incident, we work together to understand how such a breach could be avoided in the future.
