30 March 2012 at 15:25
Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is delighted to host acoustic lap guitarist and singer Tom Doughty at the North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre, as he embarks on a concert and workshop tour of every spinal injury centre in the UK.

Tom will attend the centre on Tuesday 10 April to host both an afternoon workshop for patients and an evening concert starting at 7.30pm which will be open to the general public. The workshops are specially designed to inspire current and former patients and help them with their rehabilitation.

Yamaha will be donating a guitar to the centre to ensure patients can hone their skills once the workshop is complete. Tom will also be teaching one of the occupational therapists to play the guitar so they can continue to teach patients.

Tom, a tetraplegic since 1974 following a serious accident, was a highly talented amateur guitarist prior to the accident and spent the ensuing years-learning and reinventing ways to play the guitar without finger movement and now enjoys an international fan base.

Tom Doughty said: "I want to demonstrate the positive physical and emotional benefits that flow from making music and to also show that making music is fun too, for those that do become inspired Yamaha have kindly donated a guitar which we will leave at each centre together with our learning materials.

“I do hope and believe we can make a significant impact on peoples lives."
