Right Arrow Trust is one of the "Better Performing" Trusts in Maternity Review
28 January 2008 at 15:08
In the Review of Maternity Services 2007 published last Friday by the Healthcare Commission, Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has been scored as one of the ‘Better Performing’ Trusts. Women praised the cleanliness of the delivery and postnatal areas, gave us good feedback on our strong safety culture and liked the feeling of homeliness in the delivery rooms.

This means that we have “demonstrated good performance in some key areas which was better than many other trusts, but where there is scope for improvement in some areas.”

Janette Brookes, Director of Operations said, “While it is very pleasing to have received this score, we are far from complacent.

“We are now studying the review and focusing on those areas where we can improve. Plans are being drawn up to enable us to ensure that women receive the best possible care when they choose to have their baby at Ormskirk Hospital which an increasing number of women are doing.”

Notes to Editors

1. There are a total of 25 scored indicators in the review that are divided into three sections: clinical focus, women centred care and efficiency and capability. Each of these indicators is given a score between 1 and 5 with 1 being the worst, 5 the best and 3 acceptable/average level.

2. The total scores are then transformed into an assessment on a four-point scale – Least Well Performing, Fair Performing, Better Performing, Best Performing. These labels are intended to make clear that the final score is based on comparing the performance of each organisation against all the other organisations included in the review.

3. Of the 25 indicators looked at in the review that go to make up the overall score, two were scored as being excellent, one of which was the women’s view of the cleanliness of the delivery and postnatal areas. A further six were scored as being good, including the homeliness of the delivery rooms and the postnatal care of the women and their babies. In all, 17 out of 25 of the indicators were scored as acceptable or better.
