Right Arrow New dialysis unit at Southport & Formby District General Hospital
18 January 2008 at 10:39
A new dialysis unit is to open at Southport & Formby District General Hospital by the end of the year. It will have twelve treatment areas, capable of seeing 60 patients a week. It will mean the end of having to travel long distances for both existing and new patients who will now receive life saving dialysis closer to home.

It is being provided by the independent sector provider Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services UK, but patients will remain under the care of their NHS clinicians, in this case from Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Sir Ron Watson, Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust Chairman said, "This unit is a major step forward in health care provision for people with renal problems in our area and I am delighted that it is to be sited at Southport & Formby District General Hospital.

“A great many people have all worked extremely hard for a very long time and I am delighted that this unit will now ensure that dialysis can be delivered closer to people’s homes and improve the quality of their day to day lives."

The new unit is part of a national programme that will see an extra 47 dialysis treatment areas being provided at six hospitals in Cheshire and Merseyside. These will provide for an additional 235 patients on top of existing facilities.

Patients have influenced the design of the new build from the very beginning and will continue to shape the new service as there are patient representatives on the project implementation group that is attached to the hospital scheme.

A need for additional capacity was identified by the Cheshire and Merseyside Renal Strategy Group in 2004 in their report The Renal and Transplant Strategic Framework. The report estimated that the renal population in Cheshire and Merseyside would grow from 640 patients in March 2003 to 850/900 patients by March 2008.

The new unit will be situated to the side of the Spinal Unit.
