In response to recent articles about the increase prices of telephone calls from the Patientline Service in hospitals, Andrew Green, Facilities Manager has made the following statement.

“The pricing of phone calls from Patientline Services is set by the company and has not been the subject of negotiation with the Trust. We do not benefit financially in any way from the bedside Patientline Services.

“We are aware of recent advice about the use of mobile phones and whether they interfere with medical equipment. In view of this advice we will be reviewing our current policy on the use of mobile phones in our hospital buildings. Currently we allow their use on the main hospital corridors, in restaurants and coffee bars, in the grounds and gardens, and in office and living quarters.

“However, the question of whether they can be used on wards is not just a matter of whether they interfere with medical equipment, but also a matter of privacy and dignity for the patients. In view of this, we will be consulting with the PPI forum and the Director of Nursing to get their opinion on whether we should allow mobile phones to be used on wards.”
