Right Arrow Ormskirk Hospital would welcome more Welcomers
25 October 2006 at 11:10

Do you have a morning or afternoon each week you could spare? If so, then Ormskirk & District General Hospital would like to hear from you. If you have been to the hospital you may have noticed at the main reception desk there are people there who you can ask for directions and other help. These are known as Welcomers. Unfortunately, some of these volunteers have left us recently and we now have some vacancies.

The volunteer Welcomers are an integral part of hospital life and much appreciated by the patients, visitors and staff. They are often the first people a new patient will meet when they come to the hospital, so they have to be friendly and outgoing.

Obviously you would be playing a very important role for the hospital, but what would you get out of it? Two of our volunteers have spoken about their experience as Welcomers.

Bernard, who does his stint on a Tuesday morning, said “My wife received such wonderful care in Ormskirk Hospital that I felt I would like to repay the hospital in some small way. By becoming a Welcomer I am there to assist patients and visitors, whether to direct them to wards or clinics, providing information about the hospital and its services, discussing bus timetables or just having a chat. It is a wonderful way of spending a few hours once a week, as I get so much satisfaction from helping others.”

Margaret who takes over from Bernard on a Tuesday afternoon echoed these sentiments, “Having three children and a husband to care for my life has always been busy, but when the children 'flew the nest' I felt I needed to do something but not necessarily a permanent job. I had heard about the role played by Welcomers at both Ormskirk and Southport hospital and thought it sounded interesting and something I would like to become involved in. Two years' later, I’m still enjoying my role as a Welcomer and I have got to know a lot of the people here at Ormskirk hospital. I have recently become a grandma but I will continue to volunteer as I enjoy meeting the many patients and visitors who ask for help.”

Sandy Cribb, PR & Communications Manager, who manages the Welcomers said, “If you can give up half a day a week, and think you would like more information about the role of a Welcomer, please contact me on 01704 704494 for a chat. We have specific vacancies at the moment for Wednesday and Thursday afternoon and all day on Friday, but please do get in touch if you can spare some time any other day as well.”
