In a report issued last week, Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has been scored as excellent for the management of medicines. We are only one of 18 hospitals in England to have received this score.

The report issued by the Healthcare Commission follows the audit of 173 acute hospital trusts, which focused on the three themes of patient focus, clinical focus and efficiency and capability. Through consideration of a range of indicators the assessment gives a view of how well the trust is managing and improving its medicine related services.

Kevin Clarkson, Deputy Chief Executive said; “This is excellent news for our patients and great credit to all our staff, particularly our pharmacy team led by Adrian Brown.”

Adrian Brown, Chief Pharmacist commenting about the assessment said, “Clearly the management of medicines is a very important aspect of the work we do and we are pleased to have received the excellent score. We are particularly pleased with the scores we achieved in the Clinical Focus theme, where we scored very highly.

“We aim to build on the most successful elements of the assessment, and further improve our services to patients in the future. We have a recently refurbished department at Southport and hope to introduce an automated dispensing system in the near future. This will release our pharmacists and technicians to spend more time on the wards, directly helping patients get the most from their medicines. “
