As a result of continued efforts to provide better services to patients, staff in the Department of Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) have recently introduced a text messaging service to patients.

Dr Mike Abbott, GUM Consultant explained, “All patients are asked whether they would like to receive notification of their test results via their mobile phones. The process is explained, and those that prefer this method give their consent to receive a text to be sent within two weeks of their visit to the clinic. The text message either reads ‘your results are fine’, or ‘you need to get in touch with us for your results’. It does not indicate the sender, but patients are expecting the text, so they know we sent it. The vast majority of patients prefer this system and it works very well. This has reduced the need for patients to telephone for their results, although that option is there for the few patients who prefer it.”

The Trust is looking at other possible uses for text messaging, such as reminding patients of outpatient appointments in an attempt to reduce the number of patients who do not attend appointments.
