24 February 2006 at 16:04
Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust has been awarded the status of “University Clinical Education Centre” by The University of Liverpool, in recognition of the high standard of training it provides for medical, physiotherapy and radiography students on placement in the Trust.

Dr. Matthew Serlin, Director of Medical Education, commented, “The Trust is delighted to receive the award, which demonstrates its very strong commitment to developing student doctors and allied health professionals to meet the challenges of changing health care”.

Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust has become one of the most popular hospital placements for University of Liverpool medical students. Dr. Mark Fowler said “I enjoyed my time as a fourth year student in Southport and Ormskirk and I know that the same high standard in postgraduate training at the Trust will give me a good start in my career.”

The high standard of training and support from all the clinical teams, in a friendly welcoming environment, has resulted in competition for junior doctor posts within the Trust, maintaining the excellent quality care for patients now and in the future.

Notes to Editors

Each year 36 fourth year University of Liverpool medical students spend an academic year with us before they sit their Final M.B.,Ch.B. examinations. These exams determine who will go on to become a doctor. Southport has a 96% pass rate. We also have around 45 fifth year students who come on 8-week attachments, shadowing junior doctors. At the end of that year they start jobs as junior doctors.

Our Consultants teach the students while on placement in the Trust and our local G.Ps support their training in the community. Our Consultants also act as examiners for The University of Liverpool final examinations. Many of our Consultants hold University of Liverpool honorary clinical lectureships in recognition of their commitment to training.

The Trust also takes about 20 physiotherapy students, for various placements throughout their training, plus six radiography students who choose us as their placement centre for the whole of their three-year course. All of the students are supervised while on placement, usually on a one-to-one basis.
