Right Arrow Update on The Lions’ ChemoCare Campaign - PR/57/0405
18 March 2005 at 14:28
The Southport Lions ChemoCare Campaign has now realised its target of £30,000 and is delighted to announce that donations continue to be received, resulting in a grand total of £33,500 to date.

Money has already been handed to the Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust to purchase infusion pumps and other medical equipment that are now in use at Southport & Formby District General Hospital.

The balance of the funds raised will be used to purchase further medical equipment and to enhance the environment of the Chemotherapy Unit at Southport & Formby District General Hospital when it undergoes refurbishment in Spring. More comfortable seating for patients receiving treatment, together with some home comforts such as TV and video, computer equipment and more homely décor will be purchased and a garden area developed for the warmer months. Discussions have taken place with the interior designer, (who has offered free design advice) and the contractors and the colour schemes for paint and fabrics have been agreed upon.

Christine Sheridan, Cancer Services Manager for the Trust said; “we are delighted with the achievement of the ChemoCare Campaign and thank everyone involved for their commitment and generosity in giving either money or time for this worthwhile cause. In particular we want to thank The Lions for setting up the Campaign and their dedication to achieving over and above the target originally set, and the Champion Newsgroup for its support during the Campaign.”

The Southport Lions have raised money throughout the last twelve months by holding events such as ‘Pennies on the Pier’, rattling tins at the Southport Carnival and the Summer Classics, by donations from Banks Brass Band and from bag packing at Marks & Spencer in Southport amongst many. They also produced a ChemoCare Campaign Badge in the shape of Wilbur the Squirrel, which was widely available around town and throughout the Trust.

Donations continue to be received from other organisations to the ChemoCare Campaign and most recently the Federation of Small Businesses presented a cheque for £1,350 to the Trust at the beginning of March. A Charity Evening at Casa Italia Restaurant on 16th March hopes to raise further funds.
