Right Arrow Patients’ views needed to drive service improvement in Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust - PR/34/0405
28 October 2004 at 13:43
Along with other Trusts throughout England, Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is carrying out a survey to find out what patients think about the care they receive at their Outpatient and Accident and Emergency departments. Patients who have attended Accident and Emergency or Outpatient clinics at both Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk and District General Hospital within the last few months may have received a questionnaire asking about their experiences.

Patients are being asked about various aspects of their care, including the quality of care, communication with health professionals, information, medicines and the hospital environment and facilities. The Trust plans to use this feedback to improve patients’ experiences. The results will be used to help the Trust highlight areas where they perform well and to identify the areas where they need to improve.

Jonathan Parry, Chief Executive of Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust said, “I would like to urge our patients to take the time to help us with this survey. Their views are vital in helping us to find out how we are doing and how we can improve. Getting feedback from patients and taking account of their views and priorities is vital for bringing about improvements in the quality of care. This is an excellent way for patients to help shape the services we provide in the future.”

Every NHS hospital trust in England is carrying out this survey as part of a national programme led by the Healthcare Commission (CHAI). This survey is part of the commitment, set out in the NHS Plan, to design a health service around the needs of patients. The centrally co-ordinated national survey will enable organisations to compare their results, and will identify the trusts where patients give the most positive responses so that best practice can be shared. The survey results will contribute to national performance indicators and star ratings published by the Healthcare Commission.

Results of the survey will be available early in 2005 and will be published on the Trust website: www.southportandormskirk.nhs.uk or on the Healthcare Commission’s website: www.healthcarecommission.org.uk
