Right Arrow Southport and Ormskirk in top 20 best performing trust
03 December 2012 at 16:21
Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has been named one of England’s top 20 performing NHS trusts.

The figures for clinical efficiency and treatment at acute non-specialist trusts were revealed in the annual Hospital Guide published by health analytics firm Dr Foster.

The Trust provides health care at Southport and Formby District General Hospital, Ormskirk and District General Hospital and to NHS patients in clinics and at home across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire.

Dr Foster used 13 separate measures to rate 146 NHS trusts. Southport and Ormskirk is also the only Merseyside and West Lancashire trust to be named in the top 100.

The trusts’ final scores were based on the number of categories out of 13 in which they were a high performer minus the number in which they were a low performer.

The Trust did particularly well on measures looking at patients’ lengths of stay in hospital where it performed as expected or better.

Dr Geraldine Boocock, Medical Director of the Trust, said: “Discharging patients promptly when they’re medically fit is almost always a good thing.

“Many patients want to go home and, where the elderly are concerned in particular, long periods of inactivity in a hospital bed can do more harm than good in aiding a successful recovery.

“As a Trust that provides care in patients’ homes and local clinics, we are also working with GP colleagues to develop new ways of improving care outside hospital.

“This will help prevent unnecessary admissions which, in turn, will keep beds open to the very poorly patients who need them.”

Chief Executive Jonathan Parry added: “Maintaining and improving the quality of care in a NHS trust such as ours is a huge challenge against a background of increasing demand for our services and tighter resources.

“I am also very pleased that all the staff’s hard work is producing measurable clinical benefits for patients.”
