Right Arrow Opportunity for Sneak Preview of Long Awaited Dialysis Unit at Southport
31 December 2008 at 11:47

Patients, carers and their families will be offered the chance to see inside the new, state-of-the-art kidney dialysis unit at Southport, before it officially opens its doors for business.

The Southport NHS Dialysis Unit will be holding two open days – on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th January 2009, between 10am and 3pm – to give patients, as well as hospital staff and local people, the opportunity to see both the new unit, and some of the cutting edge technology responsible for ensuring patients receive the highest quality treatment available.

The unit – the subject of a long-running local fundraising campaign – is one of a number of either new or refurbished facilities, which have been built/adapted across Cheshire and Merseyside as part of the Government’s independent sector procurement programme.

Similar units at Halton and Clatterbridge opened in 2008, and units at St Helens and Warrington will follow in 2009 and 2010. The overall scheme will result in an additional 41 dialysis stations across the region.

The Southport unit will be managed by Fresenius Medical Care, who operate the other units in the scheme, but patients will be clinically managed by consultant nephrologists from Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

All Fresenius units are similarly equipped with access controlled entrances to wards; comfortable patient waiting areas; consulting rooms; staff rooms and showers; bright and airy treatment areas, including isolation rooms, all fitted with televisions, including Freeview and radio, as well as individual washbasins, disposable curtains, sheets and pillowcases; plus state-of-the-art water treatment room, equipped with a highly sophisticated filter system to ensure high standards of water purity.
