28 October 2008 at 15:18

Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust in conjunction with the Heart of Mersey has this week launched a ‘healthy eating’ programme in hospitals for staff. this is part of a programme launched across 10 NHS Trusts within Cheshire & Merseyside.

The programme, thanks to the collaborative effort of the Trusts will result in improved healthy food options and meal deals available to over 30,000 staff during their working day.

To help launch the event in the hospitals at both Southport and Ormskirk, a number of local suppliers brought in some examples of their products for staff members to try. These were Chicken Joes, Mark Clegg dairy products, Farm Frites, Shorrock’s fruit and veg, Dunsters Farms flavoured juices, a Squash with their healthy soup recipies and homemade healthy soups made specially by the chefs on both sites. They were joined by representatives from Sefton smoking cessation team and from Medicash.

Over 700 staff came and sampled the food and learned how they can easily improve their health by eating healthily.

The project is aiming to support the Government's national dietary targets to:
• increase average consumption of fruit & vegetables from 3 portions to 5 portions.
• increase average intake of dietary fibre from 14g to 18g.
• reduce average intake of salt from 10g to 6g.
• reduce average intake of saturated fat from 13% to 11% of food energy.
• reduce average intake of total fat from 35% to 35% of food energy.
• reduce average intake of added sugar from13% to 11%.

From now on, there will be healthy meal deals to include freshly made homemade soup and wholemeal roll, meal deals will change on a monthly basis to promote a healthier option, along with clearer labelling of healthier options on the menu and prepared food.

Tracy Potter, Catering Manager commented, “I would like to thank our suppliers for their support at the launch events. We have received many positive comments about the new menus and options and we hope we can do our small part in encouraging our staff to eat more healthily.”
