Right Arrow Faster care for Southport and Ormskirk hospitalís patients
20 June 2008 at 11:12

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has met its commitment to reduce the time patients wait for treatment. Since March over 90% of patients referred to the Trust started treatment within 18 weeks of referral from their GP.

Margaret Johnson-McDevitt, Deputy Director of Performance for the Trust said, ‘”In the past the NHS measured waiting times by individual stages of treatment. For example, the wait between referral and first outpatient appointment, then the wait for an operation from the time the decision to operate was made. Early last year, patients referred for a knee replacement waited over 7 weeks for an outpatient appointment and another 9 weeks for the procedure once a decision had been made to operate. This does not take into account additional wait times for tests in between outpatient appointments. We now measure all the stages of the treatment pathway as one, including all outpatient appointments, diagnostic tests and consultations from referral to treatment. On average patients at Southport & Ormskirk hospital are now waiting 12 weeks from GP referral to receiving their knee operation. This approach looks at care from the patient’s perspective and fundamentally changes and improves the way we deliver health services. This is great news for patients and means that long waits for planned operations is a thing of the past.

Patients also have a part to play in receiving their treatment in a timely way by letting the hospital know as early as possible if they can’t attend or need to rearrange their appointment so that the appointment can be given to somebody else.”

The 18 week commitment is already delivering significant benefit to patients.
Grandfather of two, John, was having trouble with his left knee and at the end of September went to see my GP. In January, John received a replacement knee at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital. Commenting on this John said, ‘I’ve been really impressed with the speed everything has happened. I didn’t think I would get seen as quickly as this, everyone has been great. My grandchildren are looking forward to having me to play with again and we can even look forward to that holiday in June.”
