Right Arrow Press Release - Patients urged to have a Fruity Friday - PR/11/0405
12 May 2004 at 11:37
"Fruity Friday" is part of the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF UK) Cancer Prevention Week, which takes place on 10-17th May 2004. The 'Fruity Friday' campaign is to help educate the public about the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is supporting the campaign by giving patients a choice of a fresh fruit salad each mealtime and by serving a choice of fresh fruit for breakfast and lunch in their restaurants. They will also be holding competitions to win baskets of fruit in its restaurants

Hilary Lugton, Senior Dietitian at the Trust said, “The message behind ‘Fruity Friday’ is simple: science shows that people can reduce their risk of cancer by between 20-40% by simple lifestyle changes. Improving their diet by eating more fruit and vegetables, reducing their intake of fat, watching their weight and being more physically active all contribute. The current recommendation is to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily.”

The hospital dietitians Hilary Lugton and Laura Gascoigne have teamed up with the catering managers Tracy Potter and Ian Hankinson to promote increasing fruit intake. Tracy Potter said, “We always offer fresh fruit and vegetables to patients and in our restaurants, but for ‘Fruity Friday’ we are trying to push the message about healthy eating. We are grateful to our suppliers Sharrocks of Preston for supplying the fruit baskets as prizes for the competitions.”

The Government initiative “5 A Day” encourages people to eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day. Fresh frozen, chilled, canned, 100% juice and dried fruit and vegetables all count. A portion is equivalent to 80 grams (about 3 ounces) e.g. 12 chunks of canned pineapple, 7 cherry tomatoes, 1 medium pear, 1 medium banana, 1 medium glass of orange juice, 2 broccoli florets, 3 heaped tablespoons of carrots, 1 tablespoon of raisins, 1 bowl of mixed salad.
