Right Arrow Press Release - International Nurses Day 12 May 2004 – Displays showing how nurses roles have changed - PR/09/0405
06 May 2004 at 11:35
To mark the birthday of Florence Nightingale, 12 May every year is deemed International Nurses Day. Nurses from around the world celebrate and promote this day in various ways. Nurses at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust will be marking the occasion with displays in the hospital restaurants showing how nurses’ roles have changed through the years.

Hazel Irizar modern matron for medical services, who is helping to organise the displays, hopes people will be interested in the material that highlights the many important roles played by nurses.

Hazel explained the significance of 12 May, “Florence Nightingale was instrumental in establishing a nursing profession throughout the world, and it is only right her life be celebrated with a special day. Before she came along, nurses did not have to be trained, were badly paid and were looked down on. Within two years of taking over the running of the British Army Hospital in Turkey during the Crimean War, she had reduced the death rate from 40% to 2%. In 1860 she set up the first nurses’ training school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, which soon became the standard throughout the world.”

Jan Beck, Acting Director of Nursing & Midwifery added, “We are taking the opportunity of International Nurses Day to show how we value our nurses. Both nurses and midwives are a very important part in the delivery of healthcare throughout the Trust, and many thousand of patients and their carers depend on the their knowledge and skills. These displays will give them and the public a chance to see how both matron’s and nurses’ roles have changed during the last 150 years – and they can also see how they used to look!”

Photo opportunity - Two of the Trust’s modern matrons will be on hand, dressed in historic uniforms, together with displays of old photographs between 10 and 11am in Russets Restaurant, Southport & Formby District General Hospital and The Restaurant, Ormskirk & District General Hospital.
