Right Arrow "Children at Ormskirk" remembered in will
12 December 2006 at 10:28
A generous legacy of around £35,000 has benefited children’s services at Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust after Mrs Doris (Dot) Woods’ will stipulated the money should go “for the relief of suffering of children at Ormskirk & District General Hospital”.

Mrs Woods, who was 84 when she died, had had a long association with Ormskirk Hospital over the years, and was extremely grateful for the care and attention her only daughter received there when terminally ill with cancer over 30 years ago.

Originally from Bootle, Mrs Woods had lived in Aughton for many years, she and her husband Cliff had owned a butchers shop in Netherton, but unfortunately she was widowed soon after her husband retired. She was one of eight children and aunt to Roy Edward, retired consultant obstetrician who had worked at Ormskirk & District General Hospital for 30 years. She had been in the ATS during the Second World War, and had always been very close to her brothers and sisters, who kept each other going over the years. She was also very interested in showing and judging Bull Mastiff dogs.

Her brother, Stanley Hiorns who presented the cheque to the Children’s services, was met at the hospital by Janette Brooks, Director of Operations, Matouk Zbeada, Paediatric Clinical Lead and by other members of staff.

Sharryn Gardner, Consultant Paediatrician at Ormskirk explained that the bulk of the legacy will be used to fund a system called ‘Telemedicine’. “This is a system that will allow us to have video conferencing facilities between our two hospitals and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to enable senior medical staff to view both the patient and the patient’s x-rays. This will then allow the most appropriate team of doctors to make swifter diagnosis without the need for the patients to travel.”
