Right Arrow Dermatology team in last three in award contest
03 November 2006 at 13:14

The Dermatology Team at Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust are in the last three for the prestigious Hospital Doctor award of Dermatology Team of the Year. This is even better than last year, when they received a highly commended award.

Dr Aamir Memon, who leads the team, is the only single-handed dermatologist consultant among the three hospitals nominated. Yet despite this he has resolved long waiting time with limited resources.

The Judge’s comments on the Team’s application so far include “An innovative approach has enabled a service, led by a single-handed consultant, to cover a large population across two hospital sites. They have reduced waiting times by developing an extensive range of nurse-led services, one-stop clinics for skin cancer and telephone clinics, supported by community clinics run by GPs with special interests’

When Dr Memon was appointed in 1995, the only support was three sessions by clinical assistants. Dermatology services were poorly developed with long waiting lists. There was no infrastructure for dermatology or any funding available for staff expansion. Although two to three consultants would normally be needed to serve such a high population, Dr Memon set out to develop a state-of-the-art service.

Although the staff level has risen, the team has had to be innovative to meet the workload. Nurse multi-tasking was introduced to free doctors’ time. Nurse-led activities include triaging, dermatological surgery, telephone follow-up, skin cancer follow-up and drug monitoring.

Dr Memon developed close working relationships with primary care trusts, which resulted in primary care trust funding for five GPs with special interests. This has reduced the number of non-urgent patients being seen at hospital, which cut waiting lists and freed hospital time for more complicated cases.

Dr Memon says: ‘I also work alongside other consultants and provide five multidisciplinary clinics offering joint expertise to patients. Patients are booked into these directly. It saves a trip to two different consultants and reduces waiting times.’

The rest of the Dermatology team are: Dr Tapati Sinha, Staff Grade; Sue Wood, Departmental Manager, dermatology specialist nurse and cancer specialist nurse: Jackie Taylor, Claire Rapaport and Gill Simpson; and Clinical Assistants Dr Rory Kidd, Dr Sumanth Mukkanna, Dr Mike Stubley and Dr Simon Foster and Dr Natalya Evans. Health Care Assistants Susie Laven, Lynn Lea and Zelda Sutton, Secretaries Sharon Stevens and Christine Nicholls, Receptionist Satya Gudimetla and last but by no means least voluntary helper Marjorie Scarisbrick support them.

The winners of the Dermatology Team of the Year and the 14 other categories will be announced at a ceremony in London on 23 November.
