Right Arrow Sir Ron Watson appointed as new Chair for Trust Board
30 October 2006 at 10:44
The Board of Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is pleased to welcome a new Chair, Sir Ron Watson CBE. He takes up his post on the 1st November, and has been appointed as Chair for a period of four years at a remuneration of £19,650 per year. The appointment made by the Commission for Public Appointments in accordance with the code of practice of the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments, follows the retirement of Andrew Johnson.

Sir Ron has a considerable background in the NHS, having served on Southport and Formby Health Authority, Sefton Health Authority and Cheshire and Merseyside Strategic Health Authority where he was Vice Chair and Chair of the Audit Committee. He has just completed a six-month period as Chair of Cheshire West Primary Care Trust. Sir Ron has also held a range of other public appointments including the Audit Commission and is a member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal Service.

As a hospital Trust providing comprehensive acute care to the 240,000 or so population of Sefton and West Lancashire, we are obliged by law to have a Trust Board that includes a Chair and five Non-executive Directors.

Speaking about his appointment, Sir Ron said, “I am highly committed to the NHS, and am very much looking forward to using my experience to progress the major improvements that have been made recently at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust and to develop, very quickly, positive links with all interested parties in our area.”

Sir Ron lives locally and is married with two children and one grandson with another due any day.

All Non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointee’s political activity (if any) to be made public. Sir Ron is a local Conservative councillor on Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council and has held numerous positions at national level with local government associations.

Similarly, details of any other Ministerial appointments held are to be declared together with remunerations. He is a member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal (for which he is paid on a case-by-case basis); he is on the EU Committee of the Regions (for which he receives no remuneration) and he has recently been appointed as member of Standards Board For England (for which he receives £7,000 per year remuneration).
