Right Arrow Doing our bit for the environment
06 June 2006 at 13:22

Monday 5th June was the United Nations World Environment Day 2006 and Graham Turton & Denise Alty from the facilities department of Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust set up a stand to show visitors some of the things it is doing to help the environment.

One of the main things it has done recently is to start using a new Energy Centre at Ormskirk & District General Hospital, which not only produces all the heating, and hot water for the hospital site, but also generates the majority of the electricity used on the site.

Steve Taylor, Director of Facilities, said: “The new Centre provides significant environmental improvements through the use of state-of-the-art equipment to the latest European standards. One of the main areas of improvement is the installation of a combined heat and power plant that enables the efficient use of heat given off during the generation of electricity. This is used to provide general heating and hot water within the hospital buildings.

“With the cost of energy ever increasing, anything that can be done to help save energy has to be looked at, and either conserving energy or using it more efficiently as is being done in the energy centre, can help to not only save money but also help the environment. The centre was built through a public private partnership.”

The Trust is also always looking at other ways to help the environment, such as recycling and the correct disposal of waste that cannot be recycled and the economic use of water and other resources. Recycling reduces the demand for raw materials by recovering materials from old products, thus reducing the need to extract more raw materials from the earth.

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
