An NHS Estates progress report – improving A and E environments for patients and staff was launched yesterday (6 April 2004) by the A and E Patient Experience Champion, Jonathan Asbridge. It showed some of the creative ways in which hospitals across the NHS are improving patients’ visits to A and E.

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is one of 16 Acute NHS Trusts to have been awarded money by the Government to improve the environment of its A and E departments.

The Trust received £20,000 and Jayne Norbury, the modern matron for the A and E department said, “Although we have only spent about £6,000 so far, all the money has been earmarked for improving the facilities for patients and their carers. In a recent patient survey one of the main issues was about the time spent waiting for test results to come back to the A and E. We felt we could do something to improve the patient experience and so we introduced a paging system that lets patients leave the A and E for a snack or a meal or just a walk round without compromising their care. The pagers have been introduced at both Southport and Ormskirk A and E departments and have proved to be a great success.”

About £1,000 has also been spent on buying new trolley mattresses for Southport. It is planned to redecorate the main waiting area at Southport including new flooring and to buy new chairs. The relative’s rooms at both sites will be refurbished.

At Ormskirk, there will be some redecoration of the waiting area and some new furniture is to be bought for the paediatric unit. It is also planned to buy some distraction therapy equipment, which is designed to divert the children’s mind from pain and distress.
