What Is Radio Ormskirk General?
Radio Ormskirk General is the Hospital Radio service that broadcasts requests and dedications to the patients of Ormskirk N.H.S. trust hospital. The service is run by a small army of volunteers as a registered charity and has been on the air, despite one or two disasters over the years, since 1979.
Radio Ormskirk General aims to provide light entertainment of a very special type to the patients of the hospital who’s needs are often overlooked by main stream radio stations. A friendly voice that plays music geared towards a bed bound audience will often make a stay in hospital just a little more bearable by making the listener feel a little less alone. Our aim is to create a sense of community on the wards so that, even during a short stay, a person will feel part of a group.

So how do we know what sort of music a patient will enjoy? Simple. We go onto the wards and ask them. Every evening after visiting time our army of ‘wardrounders’ will go round each ward asking as many people as possible if they would like a request and if we have the piece of music in our library we will guarantee that it will be played, which is something very few mainstream radio stations can say.
We find that we get a very positive response from our friends on the wards with many listeners regularly taking part in the games and competitions that we run.
Hospital Radio is more than just playing music, it’s a way to serve part of the community.

How Can I Get Involved?
Obviously running a hospital radio station requires a great deal of dedication and effort from the people involved but it’s also a rewarding activity that’s a lot of fun. At Radio Ormskirk General we’re always on the lookout for new members to join our little gang and you don’t have to be a budding DJ to get involved.
There are lots of activities that go into running a hospital radio station such as helping to raise funds, administration, filing records, helping out in the studio and the most important one, going onto the wards to meet the patients and take their requests and dedications.
You’ll find yourself making new friends and developing new skills, so why not give it a go.
Radio Ormskirk General – 24hrs a day
The patients of Ormskirk N.H.S. Trust Hospital can enjoy the benefits of hospital radio right round the clock thanks to our computer based automated service, which plays a variety of pre-recorded programmes all day long and right through the night.
Some of the programmes were on store bought cassettes and feature many well know names from the world of entertainment but the majority of the programmes that we put out were specially made by the members of Radio Ormskirk General.
The schedule is a mix of music based programmes, magazine shows, drama and comedy as well as interview programmes. With a variety such as this we feel that we have the ability to provide something for everybody and the programme guide that we hand out free to our friends on the wards allows them to know when to listen out for the type of programme that will appeal to their particular taste.
The message to patients is that whenever they pick up their bedside headsets and tune to channel six they will finds us there providing a radio service specifically aimed at them from within the hospital.
